Meet The Designer
Carlene Gomez

What is your background?

I have studied architecture, floristry, colour consulting and interior design and have always been interested in combining the creative and the practical aspects of design.  I have grown up surrounded by building and construction as this was my family business, and now it is the industry I am passionate about too.

What made you want to get into interior design?

I have a natural love for colour and an appreciation of design which began from my time as a florist; and from there I wanted to explore other career options to build on my skillset.

How do you tackle the design process?

I like to understand the client’s initial ideas and then tackle the selections quite logically; main flooring first, bathroom floors, walls then feature tiles. Inspirational images are very helpful in creating a certain look or feel, so I’m always excited to see what my clients have been looking at and help them create a similar look from our selection of tiles.

What do you love about your job?

I love that I’m able to help people select the best products, materials and colours to suit their needs. Clients often come to me at a stage when they are confused, overwhelmed, or don’t have a clear idea of what they are really after. If I can help a client with their selections by providing clarity and direction, with options they may not have considered and being mindful of their budget, they are very thankful for my input and feel confident about signing off on their choices.

What tile designs really get your heart racing?

I am a big fan of terrazzo look tiles, we have these in the showroom with combination of large and small specks of colour. They are a bold statement and can be paired with plainer pieces and stunning metallic fixtures to make a real statement!

What’s the most common question you get asked during a selection?

I get asked a lot, ‘’If this was your house, what would you do?”. Colour and design preferences are a very personal thing, and every one of my clients are spending probably the most money they have ever spent on anything, building their new home. I try to put this experience into perspective for them, and advise based on their personal situation, budget and what I understand their likes are from what we have already selected.  If they are building their first home, which they may only be in for a few years, then the advice I give them would differ from if they were older and building their forever dream home.

What product trends are you seeing when it comes to tile and flooring?

There is a trend towards more natural, warmer tones, with water-proof, hybrid timber-look flooring often the preferred choice over tiles. Matt finishes are very on trend, and natural stone such as Carrara is always beautiful and popular because of its unique colour variation and natural qualities. These are all very much in line with the trend towards nature; organic, textural, and raw materials.

What colour trends are you seeing when it comes to tile and flooring?

Bathrooms which are palettes of natural tones with hints of pale pink, sage green or accents of gold, brushed or matte black tapware. Greys have turned from cool to warm tones which suit the other elements in the room such as timber cabinetry, stone benchtops and fixtures.

If you could makeover your own kitchen, what would it look like?

My kitchen would be inspired by industrial and Scandinavian trends; clean lines, matt finishes, metallic hardware, black wall ovens and appliances, concrete or natural stone benchtop with a hint of oak timber.
